Great Sand Dunes National Park

On top of a Sand Dune

We visited Great Sand Dunes National Part on July 27, 2025.  This National Park is an adventure unlike any other.  Prepare to be awestruck by the towering wonders of Great Sand Dunes National Park, nestled in the stunning landscape of southern Colorado. This isn't your average hiking experience – it's a chance to conquer North America's tallest sand dunes and explore a unique ecosystem; so unique that most people are amazed when you tell them there are Great Sand Dunes in eastern Colorado.

The centerpiece of the park is, of course, the magnificent Dune Field, a sprawling 30 square miles of sculpted sand. These dunes, some reaching heights of over 750 feet, offer endless opportunities for exploration. Challenge yourself to climb to the top of High Dune on First Ridge, which is a very popular destination that provides expansive views of the Dune Field. It’s near the Visitor Center and there is plenty of parking.  The round trip hike to the top of the High Dune on First Ridge typically takes around 2 hours, but allow for more time, especially if not acclimated to the altitude.

We hiked up to the top of the tallest dune.  It was super difficult with a combination of the steepness and walking in sand.  The sand was dry sand so with every step your foot would sink in nearly over your shoe top. Unlike many parks with designated trails, here you're free to roam, explore, and discover hidden corners at your own pace.  Other than your line of site because of the shifting sand there are no trailheads or markers.  You can just roam and visually move to the highest point.  The sand was everywhere, and our shoes filled up with the sand.  On top of that the temperature was over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Note also that stargazing is amazing as Great Sand Dunes National Park is an International Dark Sky Park and offers incredible opportunities for stargazing.  The lack of light pollution provides stunning stillness and visibility to millions of stars overhead.

This was a wonderful National Park and well work exploring for a few days if you are in Eastern Colorado.
