Hiking Pinnacle Mountain’s West Summit Trail. If you are looking for an outdoor adventure that delivers maximum reward for your effort, look no further than the West Summit Trail at Pinnacle Mountain State Park. Located just a short drive west of Little Rock, Arkansas, this iconic 1,011-foot peak rises sharply above the surrounding Arkansas River Valley.

While the mountain features multiple routes to its rocky crest, the West Summit Trail is undisputed as the classic, must-do hike. It offers the perfect blend of a shaded forest walk, a heart-pumping cardio workout, and an exciting rock scramble. Standing at the top rewards you with some of the most breathtaking, panoramic views in the entire state. The West Summit trail is only 1.5 miles round-trip (Out-and-back) with an elevation gain of 725 feet.

The journey begins at the bustling West Summit picnic area. The initial section of the trail is deceptively gentle. You will wander through a beautiful, dense canopy of Arkansas hardwoods, pines, and native flora. The path here is wide and composed of packed red dirt and gravel. It serves as an excellent warm-up for your legs before the real climbing begins. As you push deeper into the mountain, the dirt disappears, and the incline gets serious. To help hikers manage the steep pitch, the trail transitions into a series of rugged stone switchbacks. You will find massive stone steps masterfully cut into the hillside. Your heart rate will spike here, and your calves will burn. The tree line thins out, and you are suddenly confronted with a massive, exposed field of giant sandstone boulders. From here to the summit, you are no longer just walking—you are scrambling. You will need to use your hands for balance as you step from rock to rock. The physical exertion of the climb vanishes the moment you look out at the landscape because Pinnacle Mountain stands isolated on the horizon, the summit offers an unobstructed, stunning 360-degree view. To the North and East you can see the massive Arkansas River loop and carve its way through the valley. Behold the expansive, glittering blue waters of Lake Maumelle and to the South you can see the Little Maumelle River snaking through the lowlands below.

It’s a short but challenging hike and the views at the top are well worth the effort and time.
