Lake Marian - Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

Lake Marian

Lake Marian, nestled deep within New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park (South Island), is a hidden gem for hiking enthusiasts. Our adventure began later in the afternoon as we set out from the trailhead near Hollyford Road, ready to immerse ourselves in the lush rainforest, the thunderous waterfalls, and the dramatic mountain scenery that make this region so iconic.

The hike to Lake Marian is both challenging and rewarding. The first stretch of the trail leads you into an ancient beech forest, where you’re greeted almost immediately by the mesmerizing Marian Falls—a series of cascading waterfalls, each more beautiful than the last. The sound of water tumbling over moss-laden rocks is a constant companion here, and we found ourselves pausing often to take in the misty air and the green ferns thriving in the spray.

As you cross a sturdy swing bridge, the waterfalls are still visible below, their energy echoing through the valley. The path then grows steeper and rockier, winding its way uphill. Though the sounds of the falls begin to fade, the memory of their power lingers, marking the transition from lush lowlands to alpine ascent.

As we hiked and climbed, the sunlight filtered through the trees. At this time of the year the sun sets around 10pm! Every now and then, the trees parted to reveal breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The final push to the lake required careful footing, but the anticipation of reaching the alpine basin kept us motivated.

Arriving at Lake Marian was like stepping into another world. The glacial lake, cradled by towering peaks, was calm and reflective, mirroring the sky and mountains in a way that was almost surreal. We spent time soaking in the scenery, enjoying a drink of water by the shore, and listening to the gentle sounds of nature.

If you’re considering a hike in Fiordland, Lake Marian is not to be missed. The trail offers a perfect blend of forest, waterfalls, and alpine beauty, making it a memorable experience for anyone who loves the outdoors. Just be sure to wear sturdy boots, pack plenty of water, and prepare for changing weather—Fiordland is known for its unpredictability!

Our hike to Lake Marian left us feeling inspired and deeply connected to New Zealand’s wild landscapes.
