The journey begins near the Skyline Gondola, where the trail snakes through lush beech forests. Early morning sunlight filtered through the trees, and the crisp air made each step invigorating. The forest soon gave way to open alpine meadows, offering sweeping vistas over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range.

After a steady climb, we reached the Ben Lomond Saddle. Here, the landscape transformed dramatically — rocky ridges and sparse grasslands stretched out before us, and the final climb to the summit loomed ahead. The last section was steep and demanding, but every pause to catch your breath revealed new angles of the stunning surroundings. It’s best to take your time and chat with fellow hikers while soaking in the panoramic views. You will meet hikers from all different countries.

Standing atop Ben Lomond at 5,734 feet, you will feel a true sense of awe. The 360-degree views were nothing short of spectacular, showcasing Queenstown below, shimmering lakes, and distant snow - capped peaks. It was a moment of triumph, made sweeter by the effort required to get there. Allow time to lingered at the summit, sipping water and snapping photos, before beginning the descent.

The hike, in total, took about four hours round-trip, depending on pace and breaks. It’s important to come prepared with sturdy footwear, water, snacks, and layers for changing weather. While the trail is well-marked, the climb is substantial, so a reasonable fitness level is recommended. Stopping at the saddle is still an accomplishment allows you to see many of the same sights as the peak.
