Milford Sound - Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
Milford Sound - on the boat
Nestled within New Zealand’s breathtaking Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound is often hailed as the “eighth wonder of the world.” One of the best ways to experience its grandeur is through a scenic boat tour, where sheer cliffs crowned with rainforests rise from dark waters and cascading waterfalls tumble down into the sound below.
As our boat glided along the fjord, we were treated to an ever-changing panorama of lush greenery, dramatic rock faces, and serene waters. One of the highlights for us was the chance to spot local wildlife—especially the playful seals and inquisitive dolphins that call the sound home. Fur seals bask lazily on sun-drenched rocks, occasionally slipping into the water with an effortless grace. We saw pods of bottlenose dolphins that approached the boat riding the waves and generally having fun alongside the boat.
The journey did not end within the sheltered arms of Milford Sound itself. Our boat briefly ventured all the way out to where the fjord meets the mighty Tasman Sea. Here, the sheltered waters give way to open ocean, offering a sense of awe as you witness the blending of two remarkable worlds—the tranquil fjord and the vast, untamed sea. The Tasman Sea’s fresh winds and expansive horizons were a thrilling contrast to the calm beauty of the sound’s interior.
Whether you are a nature lover, photographer, or simply seeking tranquility, a scenic boat tour on Milford Sound promises unforgettable encounters with wildlife, jaw-dropping scenery, and a unique perspective of New Zealand’s wild southwest coast. The seals, dolphins, and the mighty Tasman Sea combine to make this a must-do adventure for any traveler.
